Configur Academy - Summer Holidays, Week 2

Dear Parents,

I hope you are all having a lovely summer so far. Our Thursday classes on Zoom are keeping me connected to the children through the holidays, and this week's was one I had been looking forward to for a long time.

This week's class was about the jar most people assume is the easy one: Give. We started with one question. If I give you £1, what happens to it? The children learned to tell a fog answer, "we help people in need", from a picture answer, "£1 buys 2 tins of food for a family tonight", because you can see the second one and you can go and check it. Then we looked at 4 charities near us, and the children left with a mission: pick a cause you genuinely care about, find out what a pound actually does there, and give one of the 3 things every charity needs, money, things, or time.

So if your child corners you this week and asks what happens to a pound you give, that is where it came from. 😊

Rise to Lead
Rise to Lead is where children learn to stand up and speak so people listen. Every week they get 1 concrete tool, see it done the wrong way and then the right way, and get on their feet to use it, in speeches, games and performances. Some children arrive whispering and some arrive talking over everyone, and both learn the same thing: how to be heard, and how to lead.
Mondays 4:00 to 5:00 pm, and Saturdays 2:00 to 3:00 pm.

Young Founders House
Young Founders House is where children learn how money works by earning it. Every child splits what they earn across the 4 jars, Spend, Save, Give, Invest, agrees a real startup loan at home, builds a product and sells it to real customers at the Young Founders Market, 4 times a year. They repay the loan, keep the profit, and give a share to a community fund the children choose together.
Thursdays 4:00 to 5:00 pm, or Saturdays 3:15 to 4:15 pm.

The Detective Club
The Detective Club teaches children how to think, not what to think. Every week they crack a sealed case file in teams, weigh the evidence, do real maths because the case needs the answer, and try to catch The One Lie I tell them every session. They learn to reason out loud, to change their mind when the evidence says so, and there is not a single screen all term.
Mondays 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The Insiders Club
The Insiders Club is where children learn how AI, algorithms and social media really work, from the inside. They find out how the apps decide what they watch next, what screen time does to a growing brain, how to spot a fake, and how to catch AI when it flatters or lies, so it stays a machine and never becomes a friend. There are no accounts, no feeds and nothing typed into a chatbot, and all of it is built as games and challenges.
Thursdays 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

All 4 clubs run at Patch, 42 York Street, Twickenham, for children aged 8 to 12, and membership is £65 a month for 1 club, with reduced rates across 2, 3 or all 4. On Mondays and Thursdays, children doing both clubs have dinner with us from 5-5:30 pm. Saturdays, children doing both clubs stay with us from 2:00 to 4:15 pm, with snacks and drinks in between. And finally, the holiday clubs. I am very excited to be building these, and I am thinking bigger than usual. I am combining all the life skills I am on a mission to teach our children into days full of fun, games, play and learning, with a real sense at the end of the day of having achieved something and having been very happy doing it. 😊
