Configur Academy - Summer Holidays, Week 1

Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a lovely first week of the summer holidays. There were no classes this week, but we certainly loved our first online class of Young Founders House, where we talked about the marketing tricks companies use to make us spend more money, and about how to save for something big the children really want to buy.

I have also made them a webpage to work out the maths, called My Saving Plan, and you can find it here: save.configuracademy.com. They put in what they are saving for and what they can put away each week, and it shows them when they will have it. You can print the plan at home and tick it off together, which is the part that keeps them accountable. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere; it stays on your own screen.

Thank you so much for your support in rebooking your current classes, and for the support you have given the new ones. Rise to Lead and Young Founders House are both down to 1 space now, with a long waiting list behind them, so I have decided to open 2 more classes from September, both on Saturdays.

Rise to Lead will run on Saturdays, 2:00 to 3:00 pm, and Young Founders House will run on the same day, 3:15 to 4:15 pm. Children doing both clubs can stay with us from 2:00 to 4:15 pm, and I will provide some snacks and drinks in between the classes.

So if weekdays do not really work for you and you would like a Saturday place, you can book directly on the website at configuracademy.com. If you are already with us and you would like to change anything, just send me an email or a text, or let me know through the link I have already sent you.

I have had so much lovely feedback from you on my Thursday 5:30 club, and I have made some real changes to it. First, the name. It is now called The Insiders Club.

Then the aim. I know a lot of us dread the day our children are handed their first phone, and plenty of us are already past that day. When I think of Eliza, and how addicted to screens she already is even with a very strict allowance of weekends only and set hours, I realised that limits on their own are not the solution. Imposing limits definitely helps, but making them understand why those limits are there, and helping them make better decisions when we are not the ones controlling their screen time or everything they do on their phones, is a great deal harder, and to my mind it is the better thing to do.

This is why I always wanted to teach my own children how it works from the inside. How the algorithms that keep our children hooked to the screen actually manage it. What it does to their brain. How social media works underneath. And most of all AI, understanding it, learning how it works, properly accepting that it is a machine and not a friend, how to spot a fake, how to tell when it is lying to them, and how to make it work to their advantage in a world where working with AI is unavoidable.

That is why I built The Insiders Club, and it is one of the most important and most personal projects I have made. I see every day through my AI company how it is changing the workplace, people's lives and, most of all, our children's future, and I see what screens and social media are doing to them, so I decided to do something about it. For the children, all of it is built as games and challenges, so it will feel like playing rather than the boring, classroom sort of learning. Trust me on that. 😊

And finally, the holiday clubs. I am very excited to be building these, and I am thinking bigger than usual. I am combining all the life skills I am on a mission to teach our children into days full of fun, games, play and learning, with a real sense at the end of the day of having achieved something and having been very happy doing it. 😊
